This book was a light read with pleasing and displeasing elements.
It’s about 17-year-old Mattie and her life tending a farm with three sisters and a pa while chasing her dream of becoming a writer. The story was a compelling and fascinating glimpse into a poor northern lifestyle. The plot line did seem slightly overused, however: a small-town girl trying to achieve a big-city dream? Seen before. The setting and characters were very interesting to me- I connected with a lot of them, especially Mattie with her love of words. I thought the usage of vocabulary at the beginnings of chapters was clever and educational. The writing in A Northern Light could be a bit tedious at times, but stayed real and sincere throughout.
A Northern Light is recommended to any fans of historical fiction, strong female characters, and notes of paranormal and romance.
